Transtibial (Below-Knee) Prosthetics

Transtibial prosthetics are designed for individuals who have undergone a below-knee amputation and retain the knee joint. Preserving the knee allows for more natural movement, improved stability, and increased walking efficiency.

At InStride Prosthetics and Orthotics, transtibial prosthetic care begins with a thorough evaluation of the residual limb, skin condition, strength, and functional goals. Our on-site fabrication facility and 3D scanning technology allow us to create and adjust your prosthesis efficiently, often reducing wait times compared to practices that outsource fabrication. We design each prosthesis to provide optimal comfort, alignment, and energy efficiency while protecting sensitive tissue.

Our approach emphasizes:

  • Secure, comfortable socket design

  • Appropriate suspension systems for daily use

  • Prosthetic feet selected based on activity level and terrain

  • Ongoing adjustments to support long-term limb health

Transtibial prosthetic solutions are appropriate for a wide range of activity levels, from limited household ambulation to high-functioning community mobility.

For Referring Physicians: Patients may be referred pre-operatively for consultation or post-operatively once wound healing permits. We provide progress updates and collaborate closely with your rehabilitation team throughout the fitting process.

Transfemoral (Above-Knee) Prosthetics

Transfemoral prosthetics serve individuals who have undergone an above-knee amputation and no longer have a natural knee joint. These systems require careful coordination of socket design, knee function, and foot selection to ensure safe and efficient mobility.

Our clinical team takes a comprehensive approach to transfemoral prosthetic care, focusing on stability, balance, and confidence during walking, standing, and transitional movements. Same-practitioner continuity from evaluation through delivery ensures consistent care and builds the trust essential for successful prosthetic outcomes.

Key components of transfemoral prosthetic care include:

  • Customized socket design to support comfort and control

  • Knee system selection based on strength, coordination, and environment

  • Fall-risk assessment and safety considerations

  • Ongoing gait evaluation and follow-up care

We work closely with patients and rehabilitation providers to ensure the prosthetic system aligns with functional goals and lifestyle needs.

Microprocessor Knee Systems

Microprocessor knee systems utilize advanced sensor technology and computerized control to adapt to changes in walking speed, terrain, and movement patterns in real time. These systems are designed to enhance safety, stability, and energy efficiency for individuals with above-knee limb loss.

Microprocessor knees can provide:

  • Improved stance stability

  • Enhanced control on uneven surfaces and stairs

  • Reduced fall risk

  • Smoother, more natural gait patterns

At InStride Prosthetics and Orthotics, microprocessor knee candidacy is determined through a comprehensive evaluation that considers functional level, strength, balance, and daily activity demands. We assist with clinical documentation and insurance authorization requirements when advanced technology is medically appropriate, working to ensure access to the most suitable prosthetic solution.

For Referring Physicians: We provide comprehensive documentation support for microprocessor knee authorization and work collaboratively with your rehabilitation team throughout the fitting process. Evaluation appointments can be scheduled within 48 hours of referral.

Partial Foot Prosthetics

Partial foot amputations involve the surgical removal of part of the foot, which can include toes, the forefoot, or midfoot. These procedures may be necessary due to diabetes-related complications, trauma, infection, or vascular conditions. Proper post-amputation care is essential to support healing, prevent complications, and restore mobility.

At InStride Prosthetics and Orthotics, we specialize in providing comprehensive care for individuals recovering from partial foot amputations, combining prosthetic and orthotic solutions with patient education and rehabilitation support. Our collaborative relationship with podiatrists, vascular surgeons, and wound care specialists throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania ensures coordinated, multidisciplinary care.

Upper Limb Prosthetics

Upper limb prosthetics are designed to help individuals regain functional use of the arm, hand, or fingers following amputation or limb difference. These devices can support daily activities such as eating, dressing, work tasks, and recreational activities, helping restore independence and confidence.

At InStride Prosthetics and Orthotics, upper limb prosthetic care is highly individualized. Each patient's functional needs, lifestyle demands, and personal goals are carefully evaluated to determine the most appropriate prosthetic solution. Our focus is on comfort, usability, and long-term success through thoughtful device selection, training, and follow-up care.

Upper limb prosthetic services may be appropriate for individuals with:

  • Partial hand or finger loss

  • Transradial (below-elbow) amputation

  • Transhumeral (above-elbow) amputation

  • Congenital limb differences

Types of Upper Limb Prosthetic Systems

Upper limb prosthetic systems vary widely depending on the level of limb loss and the desired function. These devices may be designed to assist with gross movement, fine motor tasks, or task-specific activities.
Common upper limb prosthetic categories include:

Body-Powered Prosthetics
Operated through a harness and cable system, body-powered prostheses offer durability, sensory feedback, and reliable function for many daily tasks.

Myoelectric Prosthetics
Myoelectric systems use muscle signals from the residual limb to control powered components, allowing more intuitive movement and improved cosmetic appearance.

Passive / Cosmetic Prosthetics
Designed to restore appearance and provide basic support or positioning, passive prostheses may be appropriate for individuals with lower functional demands.

Task-Specific Prosthetics
Customized devices designed for specific activities such as work tasks, hobbies, or recreational use.

Each system is selected based on clinical evaluation, functional goals, comfort, and patient preference. Education and training are essential components to ensure effective use and long-term satisfaction.

Specific Technologies and Brands Used

At InStride Prosthetics and Orthotics, we utilize clinically proven prosthetic technologies from leading manufacturers. Component selection is guided by medical necessity, functional goals, and insurance coverage, ensuring ethical and evidence-based care.

Upper limb prosthetic technologies may include:

  • Myoelectric control systems

  • Multi-articulating prosthetic hands

  • Pattern recognition technology

  • Lightweight materials designed for durability and comfort

  • Interchangeable terminal devices for task-specific function

We work with respected prosthetic manufacturers and technology providers to ensure access to reliable, well-supported components. Specific brands and systems are selected on a case-by-case basis to best meet each patient's clinical needs and lifestyle demands.

Our clinical team remains current with advancements in upper limb prosthetic technology and integrates appropriate innovations when they align with patient goals and documented functional requirements.

What to Expect: The InStride Process

From your first appointment through long-term follow-up care, InStride provides continuity with the same certified practitioner. This relationship-centered approach ensures consistent communication, personalized adjustments, and the trust necessary for optimal prosthetic outcomes.

Step 1: Initial Evaluation
Your prosthetist will conduct a comprehensive assessment of your residual limb, functional goals, medical history, and lifestyle needs. This appointment typically lasts 60-90 minutes and includes discussion of prosthetic options, timeline, and insurance coverage.

Step 2: Casting & Design
Using 3D scanning or traditional casting techniques, we create a precise model of your residual limb. Our on-site fabrication facility allows us to begin socket fabrication immediately, reducing wait times.

Step 3: Fitting & Alignment
During fitting appointments, we assess socket comfort, suspension, and alignment. Multiple adjustments may be necessary to achieve optimal fit and function. We never rush this process—your comfort and safety are our priority.
